When Google shows an AI Overview, organic click-through drops to roughly 8%.
Without an AI Overview, it's about 15%. That's nearly half your organic clicks wiped out by a single feature. And AI Overviews now appear on 48% of all Google searches.
If your business relies on organic search traffic, these numbers should shape every decision you make about your website and content strategy from this point forward.
Why the clicks disappear
AI Overviews answer the question directly on the search page. The user gets what they need without clicking through to any website. For informational queries ("what is a brand guideline" or "how long does SEO take"), the AI summary is often sufficient. The user reads, gets their answer, and moves on.
For commercial and local queries ("best web designer in Brisbane" or "interior designer for heritage homes"), the AI Overview provides a curated recommendation with source links. The user might click one or two of those cited sources, but the rest of the organic results below get ignored.
The result: the top organic positions that used to guarantee traffic now deliver significantly less, and the AI citation at the top captures the attention that used to be distributed across the ten blue links.
The citation advantage
Here's the number that matters more than the 8%: brands cited inside AI Overviews earn approximately 120% more organic click-through than brands that appear in the traditional results on the same query but aren't cited.
Being referenced by the AI doesn't just maintain your visibility. It amplifies it. The AI citation acts as an implicit endorsement. When Google's AI says "according to [your business]," the user trusts that source more than an uncited organic result.
This creates a winner-take-most dynamic. The businesses that get cited attract more attention and more clicks. The businesses that don't get cited lose ground even if their organic ranking hasn't changed.
What gets cited
AI Overviews don't cite sources randomly. They pull from pages that demonstrate clear expertise, use structured data (particularly FAQ and Article schema), provide specific, detailed answers to the query, and have content that's well-organised and easy to extract from.
Notably, citation doesn't correlate perfectly with traditional ranking. Only 38% of cited pages also rank in the top 10. Google's AI is evaluating content differently than its ranking algorithm does.
This means a small business with excellent, well-structured content on a specific topic can be cited by the AI even if they've never cracked page one in traditional search.
The new strategy
The strategy isn't to fight the AI. It's to become the source the AI cites.
That requires structured content built around the specific questions your customers ask. FAQ pages with schema markup. Service pages that go deep on what you do rather than staying surface-level. Blog content that demonstrates genuine expertise rather than generic marketing.
It requires structured data that helps AI systems parse your content. JSON-LD schema, clean HTML, logical page hierarchy, and content organisation that makes it easy for an AI model to extract and attribute information to your business.
And it requires ongoing attention. AI search results change frequently. The businesses that monitor their citations and adapt their content accordingly will maintain their visibility. The businesses that set and forget will gradually disappear.
The organic click landscape has fundamentally changed. 8% is the new reality when AI Overviews are present. But 120% more clicks for cited brands is the opportunity. The question is which side of that equation your business will be on.
