Over half your potential customers are gone before they see your homepage.
That's not a guess. Google's mobile speed study found that 53% of mobile visitors abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. When load time increases from 1 to 5 seconds, the probability of a bounce jumps by 90%. At 10 seconds, it increases by 123%.
The average mobile page load time across the web is 8.6 seconds. Nearly three times what mobile users will tolerate.
Why mobile speed matters more than desktop
68% of all web traffic is now on mobile devices. For most small businesses, the majority of their visitors are on phones. And mobile is the device where websites perform worst.
Desktop pages load in an average of 2.5 seconds. Mobile pages take 8.6 seconds. That's a 70% performance gap, and it exists because most websites are built for desktop first and then compressed for mobile, rather than designed for mobile from the start.
The result: your biggest audience gets your worst experience.
What slow loading actually costs
Every second of delay costs you more than frustration. The data is specific:
A 1-second delay reduces conversions by up to 20%. Pages that load in 1 to 2 seconds have bounce rates around 9%. Pages that take 3 to 5 seconds jump to 38% bounce rates. At 5 to 10 seconds, bounce rates hit 53%.
A 0.1-second improvement in mobile speed increases retail conversions by 8.4%. For a site generating $10 million annually, a half-second improvement translates to roughly $500,000 in recovered revenue.
These aren't edge cases. They're the baseline reality for every website on the internet.
Where the seconds go
Slow websites aren't slow because of bad hosting (usually). They're slow because of accumulated bloat:
Images make up about 78% of a typical webpage's total size. The average page contains 21 images totalling roughly 1.9MB. Most of those images could be compressed by 50% or more without any visible quality loss.
Third-party scripts add an average of 34 milliseconds each. Analytics, chat widgets, social media embeds, advertising trackers, cookie consent tools. Each one adds weight. A typical small business website loads 5 to 15 third-party scripts.
Template bloat is the silent killer. WordPress themes and page builders load CSS and JavaScript for every feature the theme supports, not just the features you use. A site using 10% of a template's features still loads 100% of its code.
What fast actually looks like
Sites that load in under 2 seconds convert 2.4 times better than sites loading in 4 seconds. They have lower bounce rates, higher engagement, and better search rankings (Google explicitly uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor).
Building for speed isn't about stripping away features. It's about choosing the right technology. A custom-coded SvelteKit site loads only the code it needs. No template bloat, no unused CSS, no unnecessary JavaScript. The result is a site that loads in 1 to 2 seconds on mobile, not because it's simple, but because it's built efficiently.
Every site we build at Sonder Digital loads in under 2 seconds. Not because we're showing off. Because your customers won't wait for 8.6.
